Goa First-Timer Guide: North vs South, Best Beaches, and When to Go

By My Travel Desk Editors · 7 min read

Everything you need to know before your first Goa trip — beaches, food, budget and best-time-to-visit.

Goa is two very different destinations rolled into one state. Here's how to plan it right.

North Goa vs South Goa

North = nightlife, shacks and shopping (Baga, Calangute, Anjuna). South = quiet, luxury and long empty beaches (Palolem, Agonda, Cavelossim).

When to visit

Nov–Feb for the classic Goa weather. Sep–Oct is beautiful and 30% cheaper. Monsoons close many shacks but reveal a green, empty side of Goa.

Beaches you must try

Candolim (buzzy but not crazy), Ashwem (Insta-perfect), Butterfly Beach (secluded), Palolem (crescent-shaped sunsets).

Food to eat

Fish curry rice, Xacuti, Chorizo Pao, Bebinca — and any place with a wood-fired oven for prawn balchão.

Budget guide

Budget trip: ₹4–6k/day. Comfort: ₹8–12k/day. Luxury: ₹18k+/day.

Common mistakes

Renting a scooter without an international/Indian licence, drinking on the beach after 10 pm, and skipping South Goa entirely.
